Mary Alice Silk was the first child of Patrick Silk and Ellen Raftery. She was born in San Francisco on October 24, 1887, and was most likely baptized at St. Joseph’s. She came down with tubercular meningitis and died on December 28, 1892. She was 5 years, 2 months, and 4 days old. She was buried in the family plot in Section F at Holy Cross Cemetery with her baby sister Ellen. Her obituary read “Mary Alice Silk, beloved and only daughter of Patrick and Ellen Silk, a native of San Francisco.” Two days later, her mother gave birth to another daughter, Juel. But she was never forgotten, and Juel named her first child Alice after her.
